Food is one of the biggest contributors to our ecological footprint and the consumption of meat and dairy is fueling global warming.
Yes, for those who aren’t vegan, it can be really annoying when vegans get a little extreme when they see you eat that juicy cheeseburger. We get it too. But you need to look at things from their perspective as well. Not all vegans are vegans just because they are animal lovers, many people have become vegan (or even a flexitarian) because they want to save the planet.
It is a non-given fact that we need to eat to survive but we also need the planet to survive in order for us to survive. With the amount of meat we consume means more animals are farmed meaning more crops are needed to feed them. Unfortunately, the planet can’t sustain both the increasing number of human and animal populations. With both populations increasing, this will continue to contribute to global warming, pollution, deforestation, land degradation, water scarcity and the extinction of species. Things become simply, imbalanced. With that, the adoption of a vegetarian diet is important to achieve environmental sustainability.
We’re not saying that you should cut out your meat all together, that would be a little too drastic for many of us but cutting your meat consumption a little (maybe twice a week?) could actually really make a change.

Kicking the meat can be tough but one can make small changes in their lives to help make a difference (with skipping the meat being just one of them). Here are a few other suggestions we have for you to ponder upon to reduce your carbon footprint and to help save this planet which we call home.
- Reduce the consumption of meat – Have a meat-free day of the week or even a couple of days a week. You still get great nutrients eating lots of veggies. The buddhists got it right with their meat-free Fridays. 😉
- Reduce food waste – We’ve already exceeded our food consumption capacity for the year 2020 and that was on 22nd August. This means since then, we’ve already started consuming our resources for next year.
- Reduce your Plastic Waste – We all know by now that single use plastics is one of the most damaging products to the environment. For you to start reducing your plastic consumption, use reusable bags, bring reusable cups with you, if you tapau – use your own containers, say no to straws, buy refillable cleaning products, the list can go on.
- Conserve your Water – while 70% of the planet is covered in water, only 2.5% is fresh water. Even with that, most is glaciers and snowfields making only 1% of fresh water accessible. Reduce your water wastage by taking shorter showers, turn off the water when brushing your teeth or shaving, avoid doing small laundry washes, and more.
- Buy Second Hand – not only does this help save the planet, it helps save your bank too. We also avoid more crap getting dumped into landfills. If you have things that are in good condition but you don’t want anymore, why not you sell them online or give them away to a charity shop rather than throwing them away.
- Consider having 1 Less Child – We’re not saying DON’T HAVE KIDS, researchers agree that having just 1 child per family would be a responsible way to maintain the world population and adopting children (rather than making more) will have negative impact at all. The quickest way to reduce emissions is by slowing the population growth.
- Volunteer – Get on the ground and actually do something about it. Sign up and volunteer with Fuze Ecoteer or any other organisation that works towards making the world a more livable place.
- Donate to a Cause – There are many causes out there who are doing something to make a change. If you can’t do it yourself, you can help by funding them to do more. A little donation can go a long way.
- Speak Up – Your voice is the most powerful tool you can have. We are all residents of this planet and we all want to survive but until it hits us directly. We are the first generation to know that we are destroying our planet and we could even be the last to do something about it.
With all of this information, hopefully by the middle of the century, dietary changes could reduce global carbon dioxide emissions by up to 8 billion tons a year.
This is great news for the planet as well as humanity. Good enough news for us to be able to sacrifice our burgers and satay every once in a while too, don’t you think?
