But conservation is not neat. In Borneo, weather changes plans, tides set the timetable, trails demand patience and wildlife does not appear on cue. Students discover that collecting reliable data takes care, that conservation decisions involve competing needs, and that local communities are central to lasting environmental protection.

This is where fieldwork changes the quality of learning. It is not all dramatic wildlife encounters. It includes early starts, careful monitoring, team communication, problem-solving and respect for established protocols.

For school groups, the benefits are equally powerful but often more personal. The value of discomfort, done properly

The aim is never to make young people suffer for the sake of it. Good expedition planning provides clear safety procedures, trained supervision, suitable accommodation and realistic activity levels.

This should not be confused with a belief that fieldwork is automatically better for everyone. Inclusive field programmes plan ahead, offer varied roles and avoid defining participation only through physical endurance.

The best learning experiences combine preparation, field participation and reflection. Before travelling, students need the ecological context and practical briefing. In the field, they need a meaningful role. Afterwards, they need time to analyse what they observed, challenge their first impressions and connect the experience to wider environmental issues.

Conservation becomes a shared responsibility

One of the biggest risks in environmental education is presenting conservation as something that happens somewhere else, carried out by experts for the benefit of distant wildlife. Borneo can challenge that view.

When students meet the people behind conservation projects, they begin to understand the human side of environmental action. When choosing a programme, schools, universities and organisations should look for clear educational outcomes, safeguarding and risk management, locally grounded partnerships, realistic claims about volunteer contribution, and opportunities for reflection.
